Out of 1600, is a 1230 bad for my first time taking the SAT?

I'll be taking it again in May, but I feel disappointed. I was shooting for a 1400.

I'm also an 11th grader.

For an 11th grader its a pretty good score, I wouldn't be too worried (not a bad score for a senior really)

I got a 1300 and had my choice of schools LOL

According to some tables found in the web, this would be a Percentile ~80 score, i. e. a score better than 80% of all the test takers.

1400 is at Percentile ~95 so it would be much harder: in a class of 20 students, there should be only one that gets 1400 or more in average.

Now I am not from Usa so maybe in practice it is completely different Lol.

1230 is good.
I had less than that, but that was 40 years ago.

That's good. I got a 1280 (back in 2005) and had no trouble getting into a good engineering university. I ended up at an Ivy for grad school.

Consider it a solid start and study some more for May. Though some schools will require you to send all your scores, not just the highest. So you should double check the application policies at the schools you are considering.
