What's actually the deal with the DX25's - they seem oddly rare compared to DX33's. Were they the first produced, and only 'till fabrication process and yield went up to make 33's? Enlighten me, please |

| Most of my A80486DX-25 were made before 1991 week 28 so your guess is correct (early 486 production). |

| There wasn't a big market for them either. If you were on a budget you bought the SX-25, If you wanted performance you bought the SX or DX 33. There weren't many people who were prepared to pay the extra for the maths co-processor, but didn't also want the MHz jump to a 33. In standard tasks for the time an SX-33 outperformed a DX-25 but cost less. |

Thanks for clarifying and confirming my theory. Sad, though, that they are so hard and expensive to come by now |

They are nowhere as rare as the A80386-12... You can easily find A80486DX-25s in Ebay or here occasionally...
Only some Sspecs are extremely rare like SX249 or SX250 (and I would trade my A80386-12 S40343 for an SX249 as well...) _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |

| I expect that no DX-20 or DX-16's are made, either? |

None that I have heard of, but there were SX-16 and SX-20 _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Yeah, I own an SX-20. The 16's are also horribly expensive |

And probably not very widespread, even when new .. At a cribbling 20 MHz bus, it was probably not very popular compared to a DX33 .. As far as I understand, it was also mostly used for laptops? |

I think so, too. As most of the 40MHz are desoldered, it is used in laptop which don't have the luxury of space for a LIF or ZIF socket. _________________ Want List

From what I have read, in the day, a system based on a 486DX-25 was very expensive and not that fast. A good 386DX-40 system with more ram and a good hard drive was faster and a good deal cheaper. If you needed the extra power of the 486, the SX chip would do as most software of the day didn't need a co-pro. The 486SX-16 and SX-20 were almost completely pointless as any good late model 386 would outperform them. _________________ General failure reading disk in drive A
