I've been looking to get a CPU for a computer I'm building, and I'm wondering here: Should I get a celeron with 2.8 ghz for $60 or a P4 with 3Ghz for $240? Are P4's worth this much money, and why?

Celerons have less cache compared to P4. Cels have a bus speed which is slower, a P4 3Ghz goes 800 mhz, Cels are at 400 mhz (it's your case I think).
Maybe also for the tech it's in, a different core can make it "old" compared to new Celerons that are around.

It depends on what you are planning to do with your machine, if you need just mhz for some maths or a game machine.

This is why it's more expensive, why it's that more expensive I think it's because of market reasons.

You should post the specs of both for more help, this is a start.

If you are only going to browse the internet and send/recieve emails then get the smelleron..er celeron.

If you plan on doing anything else get the P4.

Or you could be sensible and go AMD... pssst Fanboy Alert..

celeron 2.8 ghz pentuim 4 3ghz
FSB 533 mhz 800 mhz
L1 Cache 12KB+16KB 12KB+8KB
L2 Cache 256KB 512KB
process type 90 nm 0.13 µm

these are the main differences, as far as I can see. The P4 does support Hyper threading, though, whereas the celeron doesn't. I am thinking about using the computer as a gaming machine.

and also I've already bought the motherboard so sorry all yous who are begging me to get AMD.

Unless you already have the mobo their is really no good reason to buy Intel. They cost more and run slower and hotter. Heck, even if you already have the motherboard you would probably still get more bang for the buck out of an athlon 64 and a new motherboard.

If it were me I would wait until the new technology is out (AM2 / Conroe) then buy the slightly older stuff. Either new or second hand you get a bargain, and its not that far off top spec.

yeah.. waiting a couple of months can save a wad. Maybe get the system you have up and running with a cheap cpu.. see how it works for you.. then upgrade later. You'll appreciate the increase in power more and find a better deal.
