Good Day,

I would like to upgrade my old Lenovo B460 that has an i3-370M cpu to the i7-640M. After browsing on CPU-World.com, it seems that this upgrade is possible since both are 1st generation i3/i7 chips, both are PGA 988 socket type, both have TDP of 35W, both chips run on the same micro-architecture and also both are HM55 chipset. I would like to have the opinions of experts as this is my first attempt at upgrading a cpu.

Many Thanks

Sorry, I forgot to mention that according to CPU-Z, the motherboard of my laptop is Lenovo MoutCook, with Intel Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge chipset (Rev.1Cool, and Southbridge Intel HM55 (Rev.05)

The BIOS is from Lenovo, Version:2ECN35WW and the date is: 04/12/2011.

The B460 shipped with the 620M as an option, so I don't see why the 640M isn't possible.

Thanks @linuxfanatic,

So after about 1 year, i finally managed to get hold of the i7 640M and successfully replaced the existing i3-370M. Everything is working well with no issues.

Most likely there won't be people who want to attempt something like this seeing that these processors are really old (about 10 years) but just in case there are some crazy peeps like me, i just want to say that the definitive answer for this upgrade is a big YES.
