The AlphaStation AXP 150 (Jensen) was the first DEC Alpha 21064 system designed to support Windows NT

They have a 150MHz 21064-AA CPU (DEC 228D 21-35023-13 )

They have 512KB of L2 cache on the board, originally these apparently were spec'd to be 17ns parts, but this boards has 15ns SRAMs

They support up to 128MB of parity RAM

$65 and its yours
(includes the heatsink, I just took it off for the pics)

What software will run on this?

Nice one. This should run Win NT4 Alpha plus any software available for it which isn't really that numerous. It may run Linux too if you're lucky. In my experience the only modern distribution which still supports an Alpha port and has a support channel for it is Gentoo.

There is also a Win2k release candidate image floating around that had an Alpha port up until just before the actual release of Win2k when the Alpha port was dropped. But up to RC4 it's available. I have run this one on a different Alpha board. It may not support the 21064 CPU though so it may run on this one or not.

Note that the CPU on this board is 21064-AA. The AA means that it's supposed to run WinNT and derivatives only, not Unix. It's because it has a modified MMU which had a few bits required for Unix removed. I have spoken about it with one Gentoo developer who had some experience with Alpha and he said that it shouldn't prevent modern Gentoo from running. I can't personally verify this as I never was able to actually run Gentoo on Alpha due to a bootloader problem.

Modern Gentoo on a 150 MHz Alpha... I'm guessing not for GUI use? What's the fastest Alpha that this board will run?

You should be able to use a very lightweight GUI like WindowMaker.
I ran WindowMaker on a 486DX50.

It should also run NetBSD and older releases of FreeBSD / OpenBSD. Sadly the CPU is not removable. My AXPpci 33 can run either Windows NT or any UNIX. It also supports PCI as the name suggests, though the CPU is 21066, removable.

The most popular Alpha box of this time, 1994 to 1995, is Universal Desktop Box (Multia).

Mine's the one that followed the AXPpci33, the AlphaPC164.

Unfortunately I think mine has a sort of obscure hardware problem because:
1. I don't get any video output in SRM (though I can type blindly and get it to respond this way), and
2. I can't get any accelerated video drivers to install for known good video cards like the PowerStorm 300.

Mine developed this problem after trying to change it to AlphaBIOS. Unfortunately I have never had time to investigate this further Sad. I think you should get some output if you connect to it via a serial cable.

Really? So I'm not the only one. Sad I don't recall you mentioning that on Vogons. I think one of the main issues was that the AlphaPC series was meant to be used for NT not Unix and the SRM implementation might have been faulty. Perhaps the original SRM that yours came with was good but the ones available online these days aren't (I tried several).

I did make a serial console cable and it works. Just irritating.

It is better to keep it flashed to the SRM console and boot to AlphaBIOS from a floppy every time you need it.

BTW did you try "set console graphics" and "init"?

That's what I plan to do if I ever get SRM working correctly. Those EEPROM chips have a limited number of writes and I've already used about 50 of them.

Yes, no luck. That's why I think hardware fault.
