Hello,

I am considering an upgrade from AMD Opteron 4180 and having hard time to determine if AMD Opteron 4386 - OS4386WLU8KHK / OS4386WLU8KHKWOF

Supports Rapid Virtualization Indexing - to be able to run x64-bit VMs inside a nested ESXi.

Does anybody has experience with this CPU?

Thanks.

On http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-Opteron%204386%20-%20OS4386WLU8KHK.html, it lists it as featuring

Secure Virtual Machine (Virtualization)
LBR virtualization

AMD-V 2.0 / AMD Virtualization technology 2.0

I don't know enough about virtualisation to say for sure whether any of those covers the features you want, but AMD-V definitely provides VM support.

Better off asking this on a forum like ServeTheHome or Level1Techs.

Thanks, that is true, even on AMD does not state exactly these level of details on their website and I do not know anybody personally who owns this cpu on their rigs.

In the link above posted by debs, it lists support for Nested page tables.

According to Oracle, "On AMD processors, nested paging has been available starting with the Barcelona (K10) architecture. They now call it rapid virtualization indexing (RVI)."
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E97728_01/F12469/html/nestedpaging.html

Opteron 4300 series is newer than Barcelona.

Thank you Neon, very useful, I need to double check because the 4180 which I have now, is also from K10, but I remember having issues with 64bit VMs on top of virtualized ESXi, only 32 bit would work, perhaps I missed something in BIOS or CPU flag exposure.
