This is something that is extremely rare, I have been working on PCs for 10 years and I have never seen one, until today. These may be even rarer then some of the more coveted Intel vintage chips, look at the serial number. 4 digits, that alone tells you not many were made.
What this is, is a chip/board upgrade for a PGA socketed 286. You would remove your PGA socketed 286 chip, and install this in it's place. This one is even more rare in that it has a socket for a 387SX Math Co, some lacked this and utilizied the 287 on the board. (I may search for a 387SX to install on this board now).
These are rare for simple reasons of ecconomics. These cost more then likely an entire motherboard with new ram! They were also rare because few companies bothered. Since the 286 had any number of sockets it could use, an upgrade manufactuerer had to make a version for PGA 286 PLC 286 or whatever other sockets were out there.
The peformance gains were dubious at best. While the 286 and 386SX shared a 16bit data path. Older 286s ran at slower speeds, particularly the PGA 286s. And while this board has a seperate clock crystal, anytime it went to the ram, it was stuck running at the speed at which the RAM ran at.
At most you gained true I386 software conpatibillity. There were better ways to spend your money then these. I however got it for $1 at the Dayton Hamvention!

| That brings up a point.... Techincaly it is possible to upgrade...the upgrade. You could take one of the Cyrix 486SLC upgrades that are designed to snap over a 386SX and slip onto this.... It -should- work... but I cannot think of a reason you would want to do this. |
