I always suspected the "gold" top is only a thin, strong lacquer.

Me too and that "gold" layer is more assiociated with Chinese imagination than limited production. We had discussion long time ago but forgot the final conclusion

I made some scrathes with knife in the corner and paint sticks firmly. It has a Chinas warranty sticker on the other side(08/99 ).

Two different stories so maybe most of them are chinese fakes of limited AMD gold version ? That would have a sense. If that is right how genuine looks like in compare to fake one ?

| You can make anodized stuff in any color you like. The anodizing process creates a thick layer of aluminum oxide, which can then be dyed in any color. |

These aluminium heatsinks can be electroplated with real gold just for the looks because it's much better to replace them with copper heatsinks
