Since my last PC rebuild late last year, I have got through 6 mice.
One double clicked whenever I clicked the left button
One double clicked on every button
Three had a fault the stopped either left or button clicking properly
Current mouse, supposedly a Logitech, has problems clicking the wheel, and has to be clicked several times (I say supposedly because Logitech used to be a good brand, so I'm thinking it may be fake)
Any recommendations on a cheap but reliable brand or model? Preferably one I can find on eBay UK for no more than £20 _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Often or not these failures come from dust ingress.
Maybe try taking one apart and clean it out well?
Otherwise I really can't think of any brands better than Logitech. _________________ My collection |

I use to use Logitech G500s mice, went through 3 of them, all 3 of them had the same fate, started registering double or triple clicks when I clicked ones
I now have a cheapo logitech (doesnt even have a model number lol 'Corded Mouse'), it clicks fine but ts tracking is not great
I probably will go back to a Microsoft mouse, never had problem with them _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Didn't know there were MS branded USB mice, I'll look for one of them. Thanks. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

A modern mouse shouldn't have a significant dust build up within days or weeks. Even ball mice used to go 2 or 3 months without being cleaned out. I do tend to clean them out at least every other month though. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I've had the same issue, at home and at work, but only after a few years of using.
But within days or weeks? In that case, can't you can bring it back to the store for a replacement or money back? |

I was using some high models of MS and mostly Logitech. Both are rock solid regardless of the model and price and worth recommendation but finally I found a perfect fitted mouse to my hand and with so precise sensor never experienced before : Razer Deathadder Chroma. Before that I used some other Razers and their sensors are really kicking a.. but because of many case models I recommend to take a try how it fits. I bought mine on flea market for pennies.
Like Crazybubba said most problems are because of internal dust/dirt. I'm cleaning interior and sometimes replace switches under buttons/roller. So far I found only three kinds of switches in many many barnds so it is a standard. 10 pcs of new switches are about 2 USD from China so worth to refurbish old mice _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

| I have used mice that has LED sensor instead of ball that usually gummed up over times. The recent endpoint refresh mice are usually left to desire instead of these older robust mice that we have gone through at my work. |

This is a common issue with the G500 series mice. It is well-known and there are a couple of ways to fix it, although it's not the easiest or most fun thing in the world.
You either need to replace the switch components, or disassemble them and re-tension the leaf spring inside the switch.
I've done this on both of my G500 mice and they haven't had the issue since.
If you still have your old G500's, let me know. I can never have too many of them!

Ball mice were resilient due to the simplicity of their mechanism. They could get downright nasty before you ran into issues.
Some modern mice use optical sensors internally for components like the scroll wheel, meaning any small amount of dust can cause headaches. _________________ My collection |

| This is not dust, it is mechanical wear. In my time I had gaming mice, with the declared characteristics of a million clicks or something like that, a lot. And all failed with a similar gap, and Logitech and Razer, although with so much did not even click. You can solder the switch with a working mouse, but I did not bother and bought a regular mouse for $5, it has been working for two years. |
