I am attempting to upgrade my cpu from celeron d to pentium 4 with no success. My board is msi ms6577 ver 4.1 and currently has this weak celeron processor. When I installed the p4 and pressed the power button the computer came on and almost instantly cut off. Thats all it will do with the p4. If I re-install the celeron it works fine. Is there anything I can do? HP support says it should work but what do they know.... Crying or Very sad

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you don't understand why it's not working, maybe you should seek a pc technician Wink
Meaning, people who don't know why things happen when they do, shouldn't venture in this field Smile

This motherboard doesn't support processors with 800 Mhz FSB.
Can you post what's written on the p4? Write everything you find on it, this will help us determine if it's the case.

Not mentioning core support. Maybe you need a bios upgrade. Can you post that too?

yeah, most likely mb does not suport the cpu as said.. its worth a shot to try clearing the cmos - I generally do this when I change the cpu anyway.

I had once purchased a dead processor, weekend lost on "why the hell... it should work"; sometimes cursing the manufacturer doesn't change a thing but makes stress go away. Smile

From this site: P4 533 mhz fsb, FC-mPGA4 package.

So, every time you placed the P4 on the socket, he waved hello and then the pc shut down. Am I right?
You can put it back in place and always have this situation.

But you could never go past the post process.

Sounds like overheating, due maybe to wrong voltage regulation from an unsupporting bios. Or just a bad heat sink, do you have the adequate HS?
Or are you just using the Celeron's?

I know it sounds dumb like "have you plugged the power cord..." stuff, forgive us all!

Yes, JUst like that... I am using the heatsink from the celeron with a modified larger/faster fan which cooled the celeron down an extra 10F. avg. Can this be the problem though? The heatsink in this thing is the size if 1/2 a brick too. Thanks for your help.

A celeron heats up way much less than a P4, you should try an appropriate hs, maybe borrow one from someone if you can. Or if you don't plan overclocking buy a stock hs from a pc shop, they have some unistalled to sell occasionally, for a few bucks...

Check your power supply as Mixeur said.

Your PSU has got nothing to do with it, if it can successfully power-up a Celeron! + further more, Upon power-up your CPU temperature doesn't go high enough to even matter what cooler you have on, there for if the Celeron powers-up, so should the P4.
One more thing to respond to this quote--->[quote="dume"]This motherboard doesn't support processors with 800 Mhz FSB.
quote]

A P4 2.8 has a FSB of 533mhz ! Wink
