Hi guys,

I have just got a CPU with a black capsule on it. for me it looks like an AMD opteron but I am not quite sure about it.

any idea ?

Is the black painted on (will a solvent remove it to show any markings)?

Spansion made a memory coprocessor in this package as well as the Cray Threadstorm, there may be others as well

not painted: I have used isopropyl alcohol and it did not remove the colour...
the caps is made of metal ( cold when you touch it)
It is pinless but contact points are similar than an Opteron ( see attached picture : this CPU vs AMD Opteron)

Could be a socket blank/terminator to protect the LGA pins when an actual CPU is not present?

Looks like terminator for socket F.
E.g. for using one cpu in dual system.

there is a label on the side ( half of it is under the caps) something like:
