I put a 80186 PLCC in a 286 motherboard while testing a batch of chips.
Was as hot as the FPU (not scalding but close to 50+ °C).
Is it possible I may have fried it? I don't have an 80186 m/b to test it.
I've checked pin diagrams for 186 and 286 and they do have different pinouts.
Thanks |

| Hard to say, but in general when things "fry", they go open circuit, don't draw current, and hence don't run hot. The one time I did ruin a CPU (a 486 I put in the socket in the wrong orientation) it got hot so quickly the ceramic cracked within seconds and it stopped being hot after that. |

I think the VCC of the 286 went into an Address, so really hard to say if it has died. In fact I checked the pins to see if it was all ok and put it back on before realizing it was an 80186
Still hot, hence drawing current.
After that motherboard worked perfectly and did some benchmarks with other cpus.
I hope your reassuring is true and that nothing happened!
Fingers crossed! |
