When it comes to laptops - Intel is far ahead with its pentium-m cpu (based on a p3-s but 4x the L2 (2mb instead of 512k) )
I have a pentium mobile 4-m 2ghz which has 20w/30w rating - under normal usage its at 38oC but under prime95 it hits 65oC in a minute, then the fan hits thermal zone 2 and revs up and it stays at 64oC - but if I lived in a hotter country I could see it getting higher
For all the desktop machines I build for clients I always use AMD - I hear they are going down tho as intel are bringing out a new CPU which is very quick.
will see what happens. |

I anxiously await the release of the conroe core chips. From the pre-release tests (these are somewhat unreliable as they are ES and Intel dosn't let the reviewers mess with them) the conroe shows substantial performance over even the fx62. This would be quite a boon to intel who has only about %50 of the caming market currently. Which when you get right down to it means they mabey have %20 of the custom built market. In otherwords anyone who wants a fast pc and knows what the hell their doing has an AMD. This would change that for the first time in many, many, years. I have to say this worries me since the whole reason that processors are affordable is Intel vs. AMD competition and AMD relies on real performance and price leadership to appeal the the relativly small group of computer buyers who know their butt from a hole in the ground. Meanwhile intel uses marketing and coercive buisness tactics (which their in court for) to get everybody else. If this chip changes that dynamic I fear the worst for AMD. I know I don't want to be back to the days of $1000 dollar microprocessors and true open market competition between Intel and AMD is the only reason we get a fair price. Other wise it would be a microsoft style world only in this version there would be no linux.
Anyhow, check out the review of the conroe from toms
