|
|
| I'm upgrading my server from an i7 to a Xeon, and by doing so I lose my on-CPU HD video. The new server board has built in VGA, but it's low res and analogue, and not so good looking on the TV. Among other things I use the server for storing movies etc to show on my TV, so I'm looking for a PCI-E video card to do the job. My goals are 1080p out, but importantly, this server runs 24/7, so I'm looking for something with a low power draw to keep the electricity costs down. There are plenty of good 3D cards out there which will give me the video I need, but will also have a power sucking 3D gaming chip that I don't need. Are there any pure 2D video cards anymore, or does anyone have any other suggestions? |

The GT 710 isn't a bad choice, but over here in Australia it's quite expensive to buy new (for the performance you get). If you're okay with buying second hand, there should be plenty of AMD HD 5450s etc on Gumtree/Facebook Marketplace/Ebay. _________________ My WTB List

GT730 (GK208 version) is as cheap as a GT710 here, and is more powerful. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

If you're willing to deal with potential driver issues, that would be a yes. The ASRock Rack M.2_VGA (Silicon Motion SM750) is a 2D-only graphics 'card', but it needs an M.2 to PCI-Express adapter as it is an M.2-2280 card. The other feasible alternative is the Innodisk EGPV-1101-C1 (Silicon Motion SM768), it is better spec-wise but consumes slightly more power than the M.2_VGA. Both require special cables to interface to VGA (M.2_VGA) or DVI-D/HDMI (EGPV-1101-C1) and a adapter to fit into a PCI-Express slot.

I'd recommend the Quadro K420, if you're on a budget. Alternatively if money isn't a concern, I'd recommend the Quadro P400 or the T400.
If you dislike NVIDIA for personal reasons, I'd suggest a Radeon R7 240. |

Older Quadros are a fantastic choice. They're dirt cheap online. |

Except over here, they're not I was going to say the R7 240/R5 340 etc is a much better deal, but even those seem to be hitting the $60AUD+ mark thanks to the silicon shortage. _________________ My WTB List

If it wasn't so damn expensive for me to send something to Australia, I'd hook you up. |

If cuttingedgecs isn't in a big hurry, I will be shipping my AVICC items out soon. If they like, you can send a GPU to cpushack and I can then pass it along to them _________________ My WTB List

| I'm pretty sure I have a R7 240 laying around somewhere. May have a GT710 as well. Will check when I get home. |

| Or if you want something else and it's cheaper to buy it here and ship it with wren's package, I could buy something else on eBay or whatever and send that. I don't know how crazy the GPU market is in Australia. |

| Thanks everyone for your suggestions and offers of assistance. I ended up buying an old Lenovo USB docking station with dual DVI. It normally stays off, and I just turn it on when I want to use the TV. It seems like a really good option to keep the costs down from both the initial purchase price (about $35US) and for power usage (about 4W when it's on, and nothing when it's off). |

Part of me wanted to suggest a USB DisplayLink adapter, but they kinda get sketchy with full screen HD video sometimes. They work good for 2D office desktop type use though. The USB 3.0 ones tend to work better than the USB 2.0 ones. |
