I was searching for some information and I came across this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Upgrade_Service

So apparently it's possible to unlock features on some CPU's:

Quote:

The program was introduced in September 2010 for the Clarkdale-based Pentium G6951 desktop processor (operating at 2.8 GHz) ... this processor could have one additional megabyte of cache enabled, as well hyper-threading, making it almost like the Core i3-530, except for the slightly lower frequency that remained unchanged—the i3-530 operated at 2.93 GHz

And
Quote:

The program was extended in 2011 to the Sandy Bridge series of processors as follows:

the Core i3-2312M (2.1 GHz, 3 MB cache) laptop processor could be upgraded to the Core i3-2393M with higher frequency and more cache (2.5 GHz, 4 MB cache)
the Core i3-2102 (3.1 GHz, 3 MB cache) desktop processor could be upgraded to the Core i3-2153 with a higher frequency (3.6 GHz)
the Pentium G622 desktop processor (2.6 GHz, 3 MB cache) could be upgraded to the Pentium G693 with a higher frequency (3.2 GHz)

I wonder how this "upgrade" works, does it saves the upgrade code in the CPU? I don't think many people bought such upgrade, so I think there is a possibility that if the upgrade code is saved in the CPU, they become collectors items?

Has anyone some more information about this service?

archive.org has the software: https://web.archive.org/web/20120127221259/https://retailupgrades.intel.com/UAUC.msi

SSPECS:
Pentium G6951 SLBMR and SLBTF
Pentium G622 SR05M
Pentium G632 SR05N
Core i3-2102 SR05D

Core i3-2312M SR04P and SR09S

i think this is just extra proof that intel feature locking isn't permanent. reminds me of the hyperthreaded i5-3570k and the e5-1681 v3 reprocessing rumour.

Looks like they have a microcode program to unlock these features Confused

Probably cheaper to build the same die with lesser potential function for these version which it can be programmed via microcode Confused
