|
|
Hi,
Recently i was helping clean out a old PC repair shop that was closing down and i came across a bunch of old processors (mostly IBM\Cyrix\AMD 486 and 586 chips). The one that stood out the most to me was a "Mechanical Sample" of a original Pentium of some variant.
I posted about it on Reddit, and they where very helpful with their responses and told me that i should post it here as well. I don't have a socket 7 motherboard to test it with.
I have no idea on what type of Pentium it is, how fast it is or if it is a functioning chip. I have attached a link to a photo of it.

Hi,
Congrats on your find !
As Mechanical Sample it can be only empty package without die inside so may be nor functional piece. That doesn't matter for collectors because it is very rare chip ! _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

That is an extremely nice find!
May be worth scrutinizing the other chips you found along with it, as you may have some other oddball samples or early versions too. _________________ My collection |

Is there someway to find out if it is a functioning chip without buying a motherboard?
As for other chips that i have, i know i have a 286, a couple of 386's, a 486 SX and DX2, an overdrive chip and a couple of P1's (with built in heat-sink and fan) and P2's. As well as their AMD\Cyrix\IBM counterparts
They had a small "museum" of old tech (phones, hard disks, etc) in a glass cabinet in the front of the store. |

It likely is not a functioning chip (hence the mechanical sample marking) but you would need a socket 7 board to verify.
If you post pictures of the other chips, we might be able to give you a better idea of what you have. _________________ My collection |

Sorry about the late reply, I have attached a link to a photo of my obtained processors. I did some very basic resistance checks on random pins on the CPU and i think, based on what i witnesses, it may be a real processor and not just a fake. I will still need to hunt down a Socket 7 motherboard to test it properly though.
