I've used the CPU World tools but there are a few things about the ASUS Prime A320M-V that are plenty confusing. Word is that some of these boards may or may not work with just the CPU and onboard video (which I'm used to) depending on firmware.

Anyway I have an Athlon 950 listed as AM4 and that should be it, but apparently there's more to know.

Worst case is I have to buy a second hand PCIe 3.0 2.0 or 16 (from the manual info on card types)

I don't know if anyone has actually set one of these up successfuly and so my reason for this long message.

I installed the 950, but I have to get some memory for it yet as well, so no testing done. I didn't know all this would be such a briar patch from a well known and respected maker like ASUS.

Why OP even wants to use that ancient CPU is beyond me, even the lowest-end Zen based Athlon curbstomps it.

That, and it has no iGPU.

That Athlon 950 marked AM4 is on the CPU World list wedged in between the usual Phenoms. It was marked AM4 so I took a chance. But right now CPUs bought new are twice as expensive as when they came to market. Added to that there is virtually none to be had. I have a very low budget for this build as with my other PCs.

so to experiment I took a chance on the purchase before laying out what looks to be $100 plus.

The Ryzen 3200g seems to be my ideal install.

beware about bios version, on CPU/Memory support page I read:
Remove AMD 7th Gen A-series/Athlon X4 processors support since BIOS version 5862

Ok I think the only thing to do is not fool around with this $20 used CPU and
just wait for a decent 3000g or Ryzen 3200g at some reasonable price point.

Thanks for finding the proof on it.

For now I need not worry about graphics cards which I haven't used
for decades (motherboards in my PCs are MSI 880gm and MSI 760gm v 34
which have the onboard graphics.) This was what I was trying to duplicate just to get another system working. Too long to explain why I used three before the oldest lost it's display.

The integrated graphics on most boards of that era are most likely only integrated into the CPU, not the board

The Athlon X4 950 is a Bristol Ridge CPU with no integrated graphics.

Most 300 series motherboards support Bristol Ridge in early BIOS versions (YMMV), most removed support to enable Vermeer and Cezanne (Ryzen 5000) chips.

I pulled the 950 and will make a fresh start another day.

But I wonder if other old time boards that may come on deal could use that
950 perhaps in the DDR3 memory era?

What is an example of a Bristol Ridge supportive motherboard?

Then I'll leave off on this. I prefer being in the Ryzen world but am
price sensitive so long as I have two working PCs.

Bristol Ridge does not support DDR3, AM4 was only ever a DDR4 platform.

My Biostar A320MH has no trouble with Carrizo Pro and Bristol Ridge, on the older BIOS versions.
