|

Trying to get my history/timeline correct for Core i architectures.
My big confusion is, Skylake-X, what generation of Core i would it be classified?
There's
i9 Extreme:
7980XE
9990XE (non-consumer version)
9980XE
i9 x-series:
7960X
7940X
7920X
7900X
9960X
9940X
9920X
9900X
9820X
i7 x-series:
7820X
7800X
9800X
Where as nomenclature suggests them being 7th and 9th generation, respectively, I would usually consider Kaby Lake 7th generation and Coffee Lake Refresh as 9th generation.
But since it's Skylake, wouldn't they be 6th generation, all though release dates doesn't add up to that.
I'm confused :lol
also, Haswell-E - what generation are they considered? Nomenclature-wise it would be 5th, but Haswell generation suggests 4th. Or? |

| Skylake-X can be considered 6th gen Core. |

HEPC CPUs in the Core series often use larger die built around tried and tested previous generation cores. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Generally I consider the "gen" of a part to be purely marketing... There's plenty of cases now where Intel has different archs in the same gen, or re-uses archs in the next gen.
NVIDIA does the same with their GPU's.
Look at the Athlon 3000G... It's a 14nm Raven Ridge part (Either the 2c die or 4c die), branded as a "3000" series.
Similar things to be said about the Ryzen 1000 "AF" parts which used Pinnacle Ridge dies... |

Thanks for your input. I think I will be classifying them according to generation implied by modelnumber, especially considering that Coffee Lake is also a Skylake |
