Hey, guys, I am looking to upgrade my Athlon XP 1.0 GHz and I searched on PriceWatch for CPU/motherboard combos under $200 (no Celerons, Opterons or Semprons) and came up with the following choices:
(A) Pentium D 820 2.8 GHz ($195 for CPU/motherboard combo)
(B) Pentium 4 630 3.0 GHz ($185 for CPU/motherboard combo)
(C) Pentium 4 530 3.0 GHz ($190 for CPU/motherboard combo)
(D) Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2 GHz ($195 for CPU/motherboard combo)
(E) Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 GHz ($184 for CPU/motherboard combo)
What would be your #1, 2 and 3 choices among these? Or can you recommend something better that could be had (remember it's a combo) for less than $200? I also will be picking these combos only if they come with a motherboard that supports DDR2 and has at least 3 legacy PCI slots.
I am not looking to overclock or anything like that.
Thanks in avance for your feedback! |

First off the 820 is dual core which is a huge draw. I have a dual core now (an amd) and the difference is wonderful with multitasking. In addition I belive most games in the near future will be programed to use more then one core at once. However, if you arn't worried about multitasking and want what is fastest right now the amd is the fastest.
My choices:
Penitum D 820 (Dual core)
Athlon 64 3800+ (Runs cooler with a better archetecture and faster)
a distant third...
Pentium 4 3.2ghz prescott
Nothing else makes any since as the other two are just slower versions of the 3.2ghz prescott
For more info see toms hardwares big 05, 06 cpu chart.

By the way, wait a few days untill the 27th when intel drops the new core 2 duo (yes the name is repetitive but intel has monkeys name their chips in an effort to confuse their costumers.) At this time intels price structure will look something like this:

then you can afford the pentium D 915 at least. |

I'd go with Athlon 64 3800+, unless you want to do video encoding. Some video encoders are faster or slightly faster on Pentium 4 and Pentium D, in all other programs and especially games Athlon 64 will be faster than Pentium 4/D. BTW, you may want to wait until Intel releases Core 2 Duo processors, even if you don't want to buy one. AMD is expected to drop prices significantly on their Athlon processors. Intel may also drop prices on their Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors.
