I really want to have a go at building a customised fuel injection computer for my car. Not sure if this is the best place to ask, Im just looking for advice on what I could use as far as chips and components go. I think I would use the standard wiring harness and sensors where possible along with all the sensors and plugs. I want to be able to change the fuel map and various other things without having to buy an expensive Motec type ECU
To explain a little more, Im building a race car on a shoestring budget - a 1600cc Toyota Starlet. I have a few modifications in mind that will go beyond what the normal computer can handle so I started looking into programmable computers for it. I was quoted NZ$2000 for a programmable ECU. Plus installation. Like thats going to happen, Heh.
So here I am about to embark on making my own ECU. Should I turn around and give up now or would this be do-able with enough time and effort? Im not afraid of the programming side of things. I just have no idea about hardware to use
thanks |

You want to turn your attention to embedded controllers... look along the lines of the PIC from Microchip, others are Amtel AVR and others etc.. the first one has a HUGE user base on the internet so it might be a good idea to cut your teeth on that one. Lots of help out there and on www.piclist.org. If you look hard enough you might even find one.

Building a Fuel-Injection ECU
Trying to replace or upgrade an ECU with commercial offerings can get expensive. Instead, Bruce and Al take you through the process of building your own fuel-injection ECU. They start with plenty of information on electronic fuel injection systems and how everything works.
