I already have common 3M trays (486 / S7 / S8) and universal for 386 / S4. Very don't like universal as cpu without straight legs fits badly and during improper pulling legs can be bent.

So I still needs a few good solutions. Maybe someone here already designed own trays and can do modifications:

1) Native for 386 (never seen genuine)
2) Native for 387 FPUs
3) Native for S4
4) Native for Motorola 040/060 (18x18). Once I saw them for sale with cpus...
5) Taller 386 (for Cyrix 386/486 with heatsink)
6) Taller 486 (for Cyrix 100/120GP with heatsink)
7) Maybe for DIP. It could be just grid like ZIF socket for whole inner surface area

perfectly compatible with 3M style in size/stacking.
Can trade with something for effort.

Socket 478 trays fit 386 perfectly. Not the mobile 478 trays though, they are too thin.

I sold most of my 386, and the trays are packed away, so I can't show pics at the moment. If you have a 478 tray, you can see for yourself Smile

I have a variety of designs I have created for 3D printed holders/trays that stack. Not designed around 3M trays because I don’t have any.

Having done DIP trays, they can be a PITA because of the variances in DIP widths between manufacturers, as well as used/new. So I started printing PIN grid holders to see how it works out. Good so far.

I'm not sure if this is what you or anyone is necessarily looking for (apologies in advance if this isn't helpful), but I recently came across this interesting "open-pin" PGA tray design from some parts I got from Ebay. These Xilinx PGA parts fit in it very snugly in the X and Y directions, but there is some play in the Z direction when there is a tray stacked above it. Some thin foam would probably help with that.

This of course doesn't solve you problem of bent pins, and perhaps this is the style you were referring to when you mentioned a "universal" type when referencing bent pins.

I don't have any extra or any design files for it, but I thought it could be an interesting way to store DIPs or other PGAs that is highly customizable. DIPs and PGAs can live on the same tray, for example. I'm sure there are cases where not every pitch DIP or PGA will fit on the same tray.

The manufacturer appears to by ITWCamtex, and the part number might be 555-02. If anyone wants any specific measurements from this tray I'd be happy to get them.

Thanks for all answers.

@Evilmonkeyz
For CPUs is not good for me but for DIPs like logic chips etc using in electronics it is potentially cool solution.
So does it mean that with populated chips there is a problem with stacking? So bad...

About custom trays. The most important for me is 386.
Anyone care about 386/486 with heatsink? It is annoying for me that cant stack them due to height...
So even if they are not compatible with 3M style, then at least compatible with all `custom trays` is welcome. As one family..

It is actually more spacers than trays, as is it not so rigid and therefore, would need a kind of drawer to fully secure the chips. Can do any size up to 22x22cm

I also 3D print CPU trays, from various size PGAs to DIP etc. My 386 trays look like these.

If they are stackable, they won't be the same size as the OEM (3M) trays

Common hobby 3D printers do not have enough printing area for the size of 3M trays. My trays are stackable but smaller, and the main purpose is to fit in the storage drawers I have.
