|
|
Not trying to build a Ferrari, but a Mercedes straight-6 Diesel;
Lenovo ThinkStation P720
Originally delivered with single Intel Xeon Silver 4110 (CPU cooller: 150W
Upgraded to dual Intel Xeon Gold 6148, plus second CPU cooler (205W)
Intend to upgrade (again): Xeon Platinum 8160
Lenovo OEM parts lists Platinum 8160T.
On the open market, 8160T sells for 3 to 4 times the 8160.
Question for Lenovo: “what is the difference between 8160 and 8160T?
Lenovo: “ask Intel” (not an unreasonable response)
Asked Intel (similar to writing a politician): “ask Lenovo”
Acccording to published Intel .xls info sheet:
Line 20 “TDP”:
Silver 4110 – 85W
Gold 6148 – 150W
Platinum 8160 – 150W
Platinum 8160T – 150W
Line 28 „Embedded Options Available”:
Silver 4110 - YES
Gold 6148 – NO
Platinum 8160 – NO
Platinum 8160T – YES
Line44 “TCASE”:
Silver 4110 – 77ºC
Gold 6148 – 86ºC
Platinum 8160 – 85ºC
Platinum 8160T – 93ºC
IFAIK, the “T” variant is designed to tolerate higher temperature, or “throttled” to keep clock speed under control… (not really sure if/which may be true)
To the Point:
Mounted in tandem (CPU 0 forward, CPU 1 behind)
Cooler for CPU 0 is rated at 150W
Cooler for CPU 1 is rated at 205W
Should the 8160 (i.e. not “T”) be a compatible ‘drop in” replacement? |
