The fastest desktop processor for 266 MHz front-side bus is Athlon XP 2600+ AXDA2600DKV3C. It may be difficult to find it at good price, so you may consider upgrading to Athlon XP 2400+. Make sure that your motherboard and BIOS support these processors before the upgrade.

There are mobile Athlon XP-M processors that are faster than Athlon XP 2600+. If I remember correctly the fastest mobile Athlon XP-M with 266 MHz FSB is Athlon XP-M 3000+. It's based on different core (Barton), and it has lower core voltage, so your motherboard may or may not support it.

....Athlon XP-M 3000+@266 FSB (AXMA3000FKT4C)..is indeed the fastest one available for socket462 at 266FSB.For a better performance overall in the mobile category of the 266FSB, I'd go with the 2800+(AXMA2800FKT4C). It was well knowned for it's overclockable ability and stability, and of course performance.
As for destop cpu, I'd go with a 2200+Athlon XP.They are good, and not hard to find. Wink
