Got this computer when I was about 16? so around 1996. It was second-hand then, but decent enough for running FreeBSD, Windows 95, Slackware..etc.
I've still got most of the internal parts that came with it (but aren't original I assume), but none of the peripherals like the monitor, keyboard or mouse.
One thing I wanted to do at the time, but couldn't afford as a lowly teenager, was upgrade it with an Overdrive CPU.
I've seen several videos and build-ups of this system recently, since I was researching mods and stuff for it and discovered there are quite a few variants of this motherboard with different features. For example, some of them had L2 cache expansion sockets, while mine has the solder points, but no sockets:
I have an SB AWE32 in it right now, which is reasonably period correct, and a 3COM 3C509B NIC. Unfortunately, I don't have a period correct optical drive, as the Plextor CD/DVD drive that's in it is from the early 2000's. Will have to check around and see if I have something more appropriate.
I used to drive a Sony Trinitron 17" with it, but that went to e-waste years ago before I got the nostalgia bug.
One thing I did stumble across was this:
https://ps1stuff.wordpress.com/download/downloads-for-type-2133/
Which has a "TOM" modified BIOS to get rid of the cache error if you use a DX4ODP CPU (75 or 100). The linked video was what filled me in on not being limited the DX2ODP50 and DX4ODP75 CPU's, as apparently the DX4ODP100 will just run as a 75. Was unaware of that.
Any PS/1 tips or tricks, feel free to share them here. I'm not looking to do any major surgery on this, since it has sentimental value, so I'm trying to limit mods to "plug-in", so the Overdrive upgrade, maybe the VRAM expansion, max out the RAM...etc.

Just joining forum. Nice job on your PS/1. Have you done any more since your post is 1+ year on now?
I have a similar 2133 M40. Like you, I was able to solder more video RAM to successfully get integrated VESA GD5424 up to 1MB. It has a stock soldered-in 486sx-25 cpu, but I've installed a fairly low cost overdrive cpu "ODP486DX-33" into the co-pro socket.
Now I might be stuck. Stock it came with zero L2 cache. I can easily add the DIP 28 sockets (just has holes in the PCB from factory), and I can add the missing two cache select jumpers. However, I think my motherboard is missing a couple of logic chips. Curious if you tried to tackle adding cache and if you had to deal with this? |
