hi all

some time ago a friend had recommended that i build my system around this mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131517

but i've taken so long to get the parts that Socket 939 is by probably close to obsolete by now and/or i should be going with more up to date technology in a different direction.

so, what's the best socket type (or even better, what's the best mobo) to plan/build around? i'm not into gaming but i will do a fair bit of heavish video editing. i want something that will have as long a life as possible. any advice would be appreciated

Socket AM2 is the way to go, as thats what AMD is transitioning all their chips to

939 still has life, but you said you want as long as life as possible.

AM2 supports DDR2 etc which should help alot in video editing etc (high bandwidth)

k, great. now, i know we don't need another AMD vs Intel thread but other than price, should i be leaning one way or another on this? like i said, video editing is the only real heavy application this unit will see.

any specific models of either to recommend?

TIA

If you don't want to spend much money, but want to get decent performance then go with AMD Athlon 64 socket AM2. If you don't mind spending $200 or more on the processor then go with Intel Core 2 Duo.

Exactly, performance is about the same.

Intels cost more, and Intel motherboards actually cost a bit more then AMD's as well.

while i certainly don't have unlimited funds, i am concerned with extending the life of the system and getting something that is as expandable as possible.

that is essentially why the 939 socket mobo my friend recommended is a bit of a concern, i don't want to invest in a single core CPU/mobo when everything is going to dual core. even if i can only afford an entry level dual core it seems like this is the time to make the leap.

i've been looking at an intel conroe (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004) but not sure what mobo would give me the best matchup. i'd appreciate comments on this cpu and/or possible mobos to go with it. (what about an ASUS P5W DH DELUXE? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131025)

thanks
