Hello all.

Here's a story for you bored, knowledgable computer types:

I live in graduate housing. Someone placed an old Dell in the laundry room (where folks give away stuff), and it works. I know little and less about computers, but I thought here might be an opportunty to learn about them.

So my main question: can this be turned into anything useful by today's standards? Can it be upgraded by a complete novice? Should I bother? Where would you start? And so on. I'm looking to make some friends for ongoing advice. Is this the place? If not, perhaps you could guide me to a better forum.

What I've gleaned so far is I have:
A Dell.
IDE Drive (13676?)
System Optiplex GXI (?)
450 MTbr +
BIOS Version: A06
CPU 450 MHz Pentium III
Level 2 Cache 512k Intg.
256 MB ECC SDRAM
Video 4MB SGRAM
An empty formatted Hard Drive.

What would you do with it?

Most important, what would you like to do with it?

Good for office use. For downloading, music, movie player...

It's reliable but limited, forget gaming and almost useless for video editing. If you don't have a pc already take it, you can put it back where you took it afterwards. Smile

I have similar PC as server in my work. Dell board with 440 BX and PIII 450 + RAID 1 controller with two disks. Very good to share files and internet connection and SQL server.
