Hi !

I have found this unusual and very beautiful chip.

Both top and bottom of it are covered by gold. It's possible to see white ceramic from a side.

What is it and why is it covered by gold?

741 op-amp. Here's a similar package from National:



That's glass in between, not a ceramic.

According to one of my early National data books, they're called cavity DIP packages. You won't find many made after about 1972, no doubt because they use an awful lot of gold compared to a cerDIP.
