This will be in the next edition...

1602A/1702A - S314 and S714

The Intel 1602A/1702A datasheet dated April 1973 in the 1974 Intel Intellec 8 Reference manual states that “The 1602A/1702A—S714 is ideally suited for use with Intel’s MCS-8 Micro Computer Set. It may also be used with systems requiring 2µsec access time.”

The Intel Microcompters guide, March 1974 contains separate data sheets for the S314 and S714 versions of the 1602A/1702A.

The S314 data sheet says “Compatible with Intel’s MCS™-4 Micro Computer Set” and “Uses +5, -10 V Supplies”.

The S714 data sheet says “Compatible with Intel’s MCS™-8 Micro Computer Set”. No mention of supply voltage but I assume it was the same +5, -9 V supplies as 1702A.

The S314/S714 designation must have caused some confusion because Intel quickly discontinued the S314/S714 and introduced the 4702A (+5, -10 V Supplies) for The MCS™-4.

That dual supply spec for the 4004 family is actually a kludge of sorts... The chips themselves run on 15V total (there are only two supply pins), but for TTL compatibility Intel recommended raising VSS (normally system GND for PMOS) to +5V, setting VDD at -10V (rather than -15V), and adding pull-down resistors on all the outputs. GND is only connected to the TTL parts themselves, which can be somewhat problematic from a design standpoint. The 8008 carried on this sketchy practice, but with internal pull-downs and a VDD of -9V due to its 14V supply. Thus it was "TTL compatible" from the get-go, which they attempted to hammer home by dropping "VSS" and renaming it "VCC."

Beyond supply voltage, are there any other differences between the S314 and S714 versions?

No other differences than supply voltage. It's a one page datasheet for each chip.

I have an Intel 1702A w/gray traces that's also marked S313.

Wonder what the significance of the S313 might be?
