Is it a bit or a cell?

(in relation to binary)

I have just had this argument about base 2 numbering with a fool who is convinced it is a cell. I understand a cell can also be applied to a collection of bits, i.e. a register. When you say bit, everyone knows you mean a 1 or 0. This fool says its a cell.

Am I the fool, or is he?

Its a bit. a cell can contain many bits, for example a standard cell logic device.

Yup. There are also RAMs where each memory cell stores more than one bit - 4 voltage levels for 2 bits, and so on.

1 Bit
8 Bits = 1 Byte
4 Bits = 1 Nibble

I kid you not, crazy electronic engineers Laughing

And 2 bits = 1 crumb, according to Wikipedia anyway.

Indeed.

I can't wait 'til holographic storage becomes so commonplace that they define 512 cubic bits equal to 1 crouton.
