AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans 2.4GHz Socket AM2 Processor have better performance in games than X2 3800. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

It seems that recently released games use both cores of Athlon 64 X2, for them X2 will be faster. Older games like Unreal Tournament 2004 are faster on single-core 3800+. So, if you care mostly about new games then go for X2. Another option to consider - buy single-core 3800+ (it's cheaper and it's faster in some games), and use the money you save to buy better video card.

For this moment (if my informations are actual) there aren't more games than 5 using two cores at same time.
I had same problem like you. I decided to buy cheapest Athlon 64 3000+. When there will be more games using dual core CPU I will change it. In this time I will buy faster and cheaper dual core. Now I don't need it so you must think about that if it is really necessary to buy X2. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Aaaah yes ! The AMD K8L quad-core !
... L3 cache is shared by each of the four cores and allows for some latency issues to be addressed in a four core environment. It has been noted to the L3 can be expanded in size as well...
One year...
Can't wait !
Although. I never will be an Intel fan, I have to give them credit for their new "ridiculously, extremly overpriced" X6800 CPU !

That is what AMD says... end of 2007 or very early 2008. And seeing how fast Intel is catching up, I am sure they will have something by Christmas 1 year from now. |
I don't think you can compare Intel's quad-core design with AMD's that easily. Basically Intel's core-architecture is shit, even if at the moment they provide the better performance, but looking at their design, they still depend on a FSB, though they are thinking of replacing it with something similar to AMD's. Intel's core CPUs are "glued" together with very little architecture optimization. Also Intel chose to use symmetric caches that are shared between the cores, while AMD chose for asymmetric caches. Asymmetric caches, where each core has its own cache, are much better 'cause suppose you have 2 threads, A and B, and thread B is doing a lot of caching while thread A is halted for some time. Because the caches are shared between the Intel cores, the active thread B will overwrite that cache data of thread A that is halted at the moment. But when thread A is started again, it will find that it's data is being overwritten by thread B and thus has to fetch data from main memory which will require more cycles/overhead. Also AMD uses 16-way associative caches while Intel still uses the 8-way caches.
As you can see AMD has done a lot of work to optimize their multi-core architecture whilst Intel was trying to be the first to introduce quad-core CPUs on the market and by doing that they had to come with something fast and not so effective
In a few words: Intel is shit at multi-core if you look at architecture optimization |

sorry, Intel uses asymmetric caches, AMD uses symmetric ones..... didn't had a lot of sleep lately, had some problems on my Solaris system, then my main Linux system needed some tweaking |
