I would like to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 8000 from a pentium 3 1ghz processor to a greater processor such as a 1.6 or a 2.0. Dell said "the mother board is not upgradable" although the processor is removable and not 'built in'.

Can I go to a pentium 4 1ghz or what is the best I can hope for and is "overclocking" an option to consider?

The Inspiron 8000 uses a coppermine P3 CPU.
The fastest made was 1GHz

The sockets changed after this.

So you are best off getting a new laptop.

And if you do so I will give you $25 for your old CPU (as I have a 900)

This is a notebook. I think CPUShack mean 1 GHz was last model of Pentium III coppermine mobile in mPGA2 package.
