I have a athlon amd 3200+. my task manager is telling me my cpu usage is jumping from 5% to 100% and everywhere in between. I've searched about 100 sites and no one knows what I am talking about. i can hardly run anything like this.

If it occurs only when you are using an OS it may be software related.

Try in safe mode, or if you can install another OS in a dual boot config and see if the processor i still 100% busy.

As a starter.

Bring up the task manager and go to the "Processes" tab. Klick the CPU collumn. This sorts the list after which process uses the most CPU. "System Idle Process" should be at the top.

If that does not do it...
Under the view menu choose "select columns" and add "CPU time". Reboot your PC and let it idle for an hour or so without starting any programs. Then sort the CPU time collumn by clicking on it. Then you should see which applications uses the cpu.

typically bouncing CPU usage = bad driver

Usually USB/chipset/hard drive controller.

I'll have to agree with the malware. Get a small drive, install it master over your current, and give it an OS.
