Hi!

Was traveling from Berlin-Tegel airport into Poland last week and drove past a grandstand (tribüne) that was located right beside the road. I tried to take a snapshot of it on the way back. It was right before Messe Berlin i think.

What is(was) it used for and why located right beside a normal(?) motorway?

/Thomas

So you can watch the traffic go by when you are eating your lunch.

LOL! Would be perfect for this, and you could take your 2000 closest friends with you also. Laughing

hehe..

I suspect the road is new? ( or not very old) and it cut through a playing field and they left the stand there?

That is one of my teories. But it would bring extra work (cost) to have it standing in the middle of the workplace obstructing access to one side of the road. But perhaps cheaper than tearing it down.

My other theory is that there is/was a racetrack there like in Monaco that uses public roads.

What do you think of the strange sound proofing / noise reduction construction they put up by some of the motorway junctions and some parts of the motorways?

It looks a bit strange to me and I am curious if it really makes a big difference?

It was a real grandstand, but perhaps it was left for that reason, to sound proof what ever is behind.

It's the so called AVUS.

It was the first street in europe exclusive for cars (built 1921). Till 1998 on a few weekends a year car races are arranged there (that's the reason for the tribune on your picture). Now it's part of a "german autobahn"

It's also (poorly) described in the english wikipedia:
