|
|
Hello
Few days ago I've tried to test my ordinary AMD DX4 120 on socket 3 motherboard (GigaByte GA-548AL) I've made mistake (shame on me) and I put cpu to the socket in wrong way... Motherboard of course did not start. I thought that cpu or MoBo are dead... but when I realized that I did it in wrong way then I fixed my mistake. Fortunately everything started and now it works fine.
I have a question... is there some kind of security for this situation (on this generation of MoBo) or that was lucky day for me?
Thank You:) |

I did the same to an Intel 486DX-66: power up with the chip rotated 90º wrong in the socket. I heard a popping sound, and saw a tiny smoke under the chip. But after cursing myself and correcting the orientation, it worked well again. The chip only had some black burns on a single pin.
I guess by rotating the chip you connect the 5V line to ground, the power supply shortcircuits and shuts off.
By the way, the same chip has endured another one: I used a butane torch to melt the solder of the back cover. I don't know how hot the chip got (>300ºC?) Anyway, it still works perfectly, even with the die exposed. Luckily no solder ended in the wire bonds.
486 chips are almost indestructable |

I just got a 486-dx2-66 with a broken pin.
I had it rotated 45° the wrong direction, a bop, no smoke but a pin remained in it's hole after removal, perfectly detached with a portion of ceramic on it!
Real fun stuff those 486... |

90°... I confused with 180°... and I didn't get that alone, my brother pointed that out to me!
I study law, not maths!
I didn't get much sleep this night.
I had a broken cpu anyway... if I have time I'll post a pic. I did that all by myself I'm proud!! |
