if i have an intel i855PM chipset does that mean i can only use banias 0.13um processors? that is what my computer came with but I want to upgrade to a dothan. I dont really understand what allows a computer to be compatible with some cpus and not others, other than the obvious pin differences.

...hehe, I know someone will correct me, but I'll give you a few extra pointers.

Your on the right track by identifying your pc's compatibilaty.

#1 the pinout(socket)
#Your motherboard's FSB(front side bus) Exemple 266/333/400/533...
#Revision of the Motherboard, Exemple, V 1.0 / V1.4/ V2.0 Determines how far they went with updates in the bios and how far in the CPU multipliers/clock ratio etc...

hope this little bit helps... Cool

thanks for moving this.. i realized i posted in the wrong place.. after.. anyways when i run CPU-Z it says
Motherboard:
manufacturer: Toshiba
model: Portable PC Version A0
chipset: Intel i855PM Rev B1
Southbridge: 82801DB (ICH4-M)

bios is toshiba version 1.7.. if that is needed for anything..
i tried googling my chipset and my motherboard but i didnt find out any useful information. so i dont know how to determine the FSB of the board,

CPU that is in there now is Banias socket 479 mPGA 400MHz FSB

Thanks!

Ok, from what I gathered as info, if your bus speed is only as high as 400mhz, then you can only go as high as a IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 2.10 GHz /400mhz/package 479.

Now ,some revisions have the 533mhz so, in this caes it would be as high as a IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 770 2.13 GHz/533mhz/package 479.

But I'd go with the first one, cause I'm pretty sure yours is toped at 400mhz DBS(Data bus speed).

Here's some found info on your laptop at this site...it has more specified specs.

Cheers !

thank you so much for finding that out!! so whether its a banias or a dothan (0.13um or 90nm) doesnt matter, just the bus speed?

Yes the bus speed and the Socket type(479) of course.

These are your main key to shopping for your next processor.
