Hi,

I got this today in the mail, in a scrap lot containing a few HP-PA processors. Can anyone identify these chips?

Hp Agilent it's a series of devices used for spectrophotometry (and other kinds of *.metry Wink) We have a lot of this devices at work, but I never looked inside. Most of them looks like old HP Laserjet printers Smile

For the fun of it, I put one of these chips on a hot plate, then removed the cap and took a few photos:

The chip itself is smaller than a PA-8xxx processor...about 45x45mm.

I hoped to find indications on the die itself, but did not.

A few months ago I bought a wafer described as an unidentifed wafer made in the 70s/80s, but the markings tell otherwise (it's a relatively recent Texas Instruments DSP).

I remember a post probably about 3 months ago that identified the HP in question. I have one myself. I do not remember what it is though. I only remember that it was not a processor so I moved it to the non-processor section of my collection. I am sure if you look you can find the post.

Thanks! Here is the thread (so the chip is a HP "astro" memory controller):

Hi spongiforme,

Do you know what exact DSP it is?

Thanks!

No. Even my assumption that it's a DSP may be wrong, judging by this: http://cnx.org/contents/c8c1d893-3ede-4248-90a6-84730dbee6b4@1

Try the C240 DSP family. The time frame would be correct. You might try looking for a die shot of that family to see if portions of the chip match (the processor core). That family had a variety of members with different peripherals.
