I've seen many comparisons of different processors and without a doubt, the core 2 duos will out preform anything. But my question is, which processor would be the best for a web programmer? All the tests that I have seen done have been with video encoding and high end game playing. I do neither of those. What I do is run several programs at once. Neither of them are really doing anything intensive. I've got dreamweaver 8, occasionally paint shop pro 9, a MySQL GUI, FireFox, Outlook running in the background, music playing and an anti-virus. Obviously that is a lot of programs running at once.

I currently have a P4 3.06 ghz processor, 533 FSB with 2GB RAM and at times, it can get a bit sluggish, but it's not really too bad. As I have seen any of the newer processes will out preform what I've already got.

So what do I go with, Pentium D, AMD Athlon 64 X2, or the core 2 duos? Or for what I do, should I focus on more memory rather then processor speed? Do I really need a core 2 duo? With what I'm doing, am I going to get the full potential of the processor or should I got for bit less expensive one and still get the same performance?

Any help or insight will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

You should take the Core 2 Duo or a Intel Xeon Dual processor Wink and enough of RAM

AMD Opteron Dual Core - cheaper and faster than Athlon X2. That is my choice. I currently using 1220 model and Dremwaever 8, Fireworks 8. All is OK

Unfortunately opterons are not a choice. This is a computer built by Dell. Pentium D, AMD Athlon 64 X2, and the Core 2 Duo are my choices.

Thanks for the input!

The Core 2 Duo's are the better performers but are more expensive.

So either Intel or AMD dual core, which ever you can afford.

Also throw as much RAM at the machine as you can. Vista works best with 2GB and is a happy bunny with 4GB.
