Hi,

I am trying to get my new, (yes bought new last year!) Asus P4T board board to boot with a 2.4Ghz D1 step northwood for the first time. Now I know the problem could be with the bios as its probably one of the orginals, I need to flash it to the last one Asus released. However, I do have a 1.5Ghz s423 chip but no s423 HSF. Only HSF I have is for a s478. I also have the adapter for the socket conversion.
My question is there a way to fix the s478 stock Intel HSF onto the s423 board in order to boot with the s423 processor and thus be able to flash the bios?

I havent seen these S478->S423 adaptors close up.. I figured they came with the adaptors to use your existing HSF or the S478 HSF?

anyway.. as for quick and dirty fixes, I have done this before quick testing a batch of cpus.....

Get the board horizontal, apply a little thermal compound, place the heatsink on top and give it a little push. The weight of the heatsink is usually enough to keep it in place for you long enough to flash the bios.

Thanks JAC, The cpu adapter comes with no HSF. but mounting clips for the s478 fan and I physically tested it and everything fits just fine. I will take your advice and give it a boot on the 1.5Ghz s423 with just a passive copper HS I use on vga chips for example. Hopefully, it will be ok just to flash the bios, I'll wait for the cooler part of the day too. Smile

I do the same thing when I am testing processor functionality Very Happy I wouldnt do it mroe any more than a few minutes, though- You can always put a fan on the top with no HSF retention brackets, though...
