I thought that http://www.cpuphotolibrary.com/ was going to ahve a rating system, but a quick check shows either I imagined it or it has not yet been set up.
For Intel chips you could go to http://www.vintagemicrochips.com/, where you can buy a copy of "The Collector's Guide to Vintage Intel Microchips", which seems to be the authorative guide of it's kind for early Intel chips. I guess that many of us would appreciate other similar resources for other chip manufacturers and/or eras and types.
The best way I know to judge rarity is to follow various topics here (those which are of interest to you or relate to chips of interest), as well as following "for sale" threads, ebay sales, etc - if a chip is rarely seen then it is safe to assume (IN MANY CASES, BUT NOT ALL) that it is of more value than a similar chip that is often seen. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I tried the "How rare is this cpu?" rating for about 6 months with a 1-10 rating but since the site is open to the public it got sabotaged. According to the polls a Pentium 75 was more rare than a black top AMD.
But if you have any ideas how to do it i would gladly put ratings on the chips. _________________ My collection: http://www.cpucollection.se :::::: http://www.chipdb.org Photos of chips you never knew existed. Now over 6000 different chips in the database. |

The point is that risking to establish a rarity index would expose to all sorts of quarrels, so if it has to be done it shouldn't come from just one person (then who? - still has to be discussed) that would take all the blame for "mis-indexing"... Reallingments and recalculations of cpu indexes (and pricing people, because it's ending there, rarity isn't just for the pride of showing to all collectors) will occur over time.
(OT) E.g. Cpuswe thinks from his experience that amd black caps are rare, 1 each 50.000 cpus. Marcin goes to his yearly cpu feast in recovery facility, he finds 5000 black caps (btw all ES, he is really lucky!). Black caps are worth 100$ each and Marcin is rich, or Cpuswe just didn't knew there were plenty around but just stocked and forgot? No one is to blame, we could not know. Stupid example, but btops become less than common and are worth 2.50$ each... Ok massive discoveries are unlikely to happen but you get what I mean (End OT)
As for banknotes/coins/stamps, a cpu should be rated for "visual appearence"&"rarity" , and for "working condition" too, being rarity the big factor for most of you. Personally I prefer working chips for fooling around. Establish a priority in creteria.
Cpu knowledge is fragmented, it can be reliable to think that certain cpus are rare, because it comes by sales numbers and production numbers. We need to find final numbers that have been published.
Others may be rare just because we do not see them sold around, or recycling happened long before cpu collecting started to be a mass hobby, but not in eastern europe or ME countries, where now all the cpus come from (I making an example, not a statement)... and so on. Future in not certain as what will be dug up...
Ok, I got lost somewhere... my 2 cents. |

I agree. There are no CPU rare rating last instance.
ex-ussr has its specificity.
Some years ago it was chaos. No dealers, no services just small sellers and flea markets.
No any assortment and number statistic.
just one thing good… recycling-men never interesting western chips only soviet. (Is it rare for you??? )
Also I've never seen ES ( I'm 15years in computer business. Have repair/upgrade workshop). No engineering – no ES
Now I’m looking for publications number of produced any series CPU. _________________ My Want List: http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22729
