I recently bought this K6-2/500ACZ on eBay. I'm not sure if it is a fake, although now I ahve it I suspect it may be...

First thing (this I knew before buying) is that I only know of the K6-2+/500ACZ, not the same part number with the "+".
Second is that in the top right corner there is no speed marked on the ceramic, and (although I have not gone through all my K6-2 to verify this...) I believe that all the K6-2 have the speed engraved in the ceramic (although it is not always easy to see).
Finally, looking at the pin side, most of the discoloration on the pins is at the ceramic end of the pins, and on a couple of pins the ceramic appears to cover the base of the pins (the part which normally will allow you to see a circle of gold around the base of the pins). The discoloration cannot be cleaned off using a toothbrush with any solvent that I tried, soap and water or toothpaste.

Does anyone know this part number? Is it possibly a fake (albeit a good one overall, especially as the writing on the top of the chip looks genuine to me)? If it is real, did the "+" get left off many K6-2+ chips?

If it is genuine, does anyone else have one?

If it could help, my K6-2 500AFX doesn't have its frequency etched on the ceramic:

Thanks. I might have come across a more unusual chip than I realised then (shame being unusual doesn't add much to its' value Sad ).

I would stick to the fact that it is a fake chip though

the origin of packaging (In the case of K6/2/III, it is always MALAY) is absent and the outlook of word 1999 didn't look right to me

I just checked all my K6-2 after reading your post, and I see you are right - every one of them either says "MALAY" under the "DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS..." logo or "ASSEMBLED IN MALAYSIA" at the bottom of all the printing on the cap, so I'll add a note to the chip on my site next time I do an update.

Thanks for pointing that out, I am more and more aware of how unobservant I am getting Sad

Here is another K6-2 500ACZ

All the markings appear to be the same, including datecode etc. I've now marked it (ready for an update next week) as being "probably fake", and when I get a motherboard I can test it on (I'll be looking for a good Super-7 board soon to replace the 2 that died mid-way through my last round of testing) I'll see if it works correctly at the rated voltage, and if it returns the right CPUID (as well as having the right instruction set and other features...). It may be a while, but I'll post more when I am sure (or be grateful if you or someone else does so sooner, of course).

Looks fairly common to me, K6-2s have many different suffix, this one is not so special.

It just struck me as odd that a K6-2+ (a model usually marked as such) is marked as a K6-2. Even more so, the fact that the only other known with the same markings has exactly the same datecode, internal code, etc.

I may be wrong, but I don't know of another K6-2+ which doesn't ahve the "+" in the part number, so to me that makes it a POSSIBLE fake - I am not expert enough to know for sure, and need a suitable motherboard to test it...
