Pentium Pro Overdrive versus Pentium II Overdrive

I often find when looking up information (mainly, now, just to check if new sSpecs exist that I don't know) that most sites (including this one...) have the Pentium II Overdrive listed as a Pentium Pro Overdrive. The chips are called (on the chip and on the retail box) Pentium II Overdrive, and are for trying out a Pentium II core on a Pentium Pro motherboard (hence, obviously, being socket . I'm not sure why people call them Pentium Pro Overdrive - is it just because they are socket 8? If that is the case, some of the Pentium Overdrive for a socket 4 board should be called 486 overdrive (and there are other examples where similar happens).

I felt I should say something as maybe people are not aware that it is being wrongly listed on a lot of sites. In case anyone thinks I'm just being awkward, please don't take offence (this has happened before over innocent exchanges of information...).

Please note I have posted this simply because I have always understood that it is the core that gives a processor it's name, not the socket, and I like to know that information sites are accurate. Obviously if someone can show me that I am wrong, please do so...

I have already thought about it, and i decided to put the Pentium PII Overdrive, in Pentium Pro category, with sub category Pentium II Overdrive. because it really looks like Pentium Pro.
I put Pentium overdrive for 486 (please not that they are not socket 4 but socket 3) in Pentium category, because they look like Pentium, not like 486 (from the size, shape & pin number point of view).

I think the best place to look for information on the Pentium II Overdrive would be in the Pentium Pro category, but I also feel it should be cross-referenced with the Pentium II category, for completeness.

What would people think reading "Pentium II overdrive"?
Slot? Socket?

For once marketing guys did their job right. IMHO


In fact I really couldn't give an answer so quickly reading the first post, was good to learn.
