hello.

The shop installed a

SIS741GX-MN SiS 741Gx motherboard with a sempron 1700 processor.

I wish to upgrade the processor, but I have as an operating system windows 98se.

I do not wish to reinstall windows or to format my hard drive.

Please, what more powerful processor can I use, higher than 1700, can I use with this motherboard; what is the most powerful processor that I can install without having to go to winXP or to reinstall my windows 98se?!

[I see that the info page has this listed
Quote:

Athlon XP 2600+ is the fastest Athlon XP processor with Thoroughbred core and with 266 MHz FSB. This is usually the best processor upgrade for older motherboards that don't support newer Thorton and Barton cores. ]

I wonder if I could use that one?
I would like to get above that 1700 that i have, but win98se might be the "ceiling" for me!

so please someone tell me how High can i go?!

thank you....freestone

Should be an XP 3000+ (333 fsb)

Any processor will do. No reformats. But if you can grab a copy of at least win 2k wouldn't be bad... Try Ubuntu linux, free OS.

Without the exact model of Motherboard is difficult to reply at your question and always is better to read the manual of the productor but the chipset of your mobo support a 333 front side bus and fastest Athlon with this FSB is an XP 3200+ Barton core ( attention there is also the same model with a 400 FSB available) or a Sempron 3000+ (Barton core) but attention at the socket, you have a socket A (462).

If you change only the processor you don't have to reinstall the O.S.
