[b]I have an older emachine with a AU31/1.3 462P motherboard, Athlon XP 2700 462P 333FSB. At this point it still runs good, but I want to do some CPU upgrades. I know I have to stay with in the 462 range, so can I just put in a 3000 or something with a higher FSB or not? Help me out please.

you are wasting your time, man. actually, the *Best* upgrade you can do is upgrade your power supply... search the internet about the bestec supply causing the mobos to fail. i have seen it. emachines wants over $150 for a replacement mobo, and they are no longer widely available.

to upgrade virtually any older computer performance-wise, buy the best video card you can afford; yours is AGP which is a limiting factor in more ways than one. also, max the RAM; yours supports 2GB. make sure the new power supply can support the load (350+watts). an extra case fan wont hurt either. you will be able to play a lot of games, but perhaps not on high graphical settings. a decent multi-out soundcard is nice as well, but not crucial.

Manual for your MB AU31/1.3 462P (K7M-NF18G) isn't available but the features show a support for the 400Mhz Barton core

So AMD Athlon XP3200+ is your max upgrade available
