Can't decide on cpu

I know my limit on price is around $300 for a decent cpu that can last for 6 years aka the lifetime of an operating system

I know for a fact it will be intel since it doesn't seem that AMD has top them with their Quad Core yet, so for the time being Intel is hotter than AMD

I just don't know the best CPU out on the market right now from Intel to go with. Also I don't want to overclock it so that something like the E6600 model can run as fast as the e6700 model. I want to buy it as is and not change any of it specifics.

So my basic questions is is the E6700 model the fastest intel cpu for just over 300 dollars are is their a better one around the same price range.

If their is also a comparable AMD that matches, please let me know about it.

E6700 is the fastest CPU at this price. If you're planning to play a lot of 3D games then you may consider buying cheaper CPU (E6600 or Athlon 64 X2 6000+) and spend the difference on better video card.
