Just been thinking of it lately.
for me some of the chips I collect (and yearn for) are rather older then me.

How old are chip collectors?

I'm a mere 22

John

I have thought about that before, but didn`t know if anyone would be
interested.

I don`t think there are many, if any chips my age. I`m 50.
I wish I had started collecting 30 years ago.

John

I was "manufactured" in week 50 / 1977 and I have 2 8080-A chips that are older than me. Took a while to find them. I have much more chips that were made in 1978 though.

I already figured I must be rather old at 31. icon_grandpa A lot of people responded to the "my first computer" poll on cpu-museum.de that they started with Pentium-class PCs. I can remember the feeling of envy when I saw my friend's first Sinclair ZX 81...

So, if anybody out there wants to part with an early 1973 C4004, just let me know... Very Happy

I just turned 40 so I am older than most of you young bucks. Did they even make ICs before 1964? :0

In historical perspective, when I was in college, I used a VAX 11-780 main frame to compile pascal code. The computer science department had just decommissioned the punch card interface to this computer. Teletype terminals were still used to input your code. We just received new Ramtek color displays. Boy we thought that was state of art. The education department bought the first IBM 8088 personal computers. I would sneak over there and write up my labs using WordStar.

Today, I am finding VAX 11-750 main frame boards at my local scrap dealer. The company that I work for maintains a HP/Linux Itanium-2 computer system consisting of 1960 Itanium-2 processors (Madison, 1.5 GHz) with 11.8 TFlops peak theoretical performance, 6.8 terabytes of RAM, and 450 terabytes of local scratch disk space....

Boy do things change quickly!

I have been collecting for about 3-4 years. I have amassed 500-700 unique processors and coprocessor chips. It would have been nice to start collecting 10 years ago, but without the internet and great connections like this group, it would have been difficult.
