Upgrading and Athlon XP 400mhz fsb prices on eBay

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade my MythTV computer for HDTV. I wanted an Athlon XP 2900 to 3200 processor with 400mhz fsb to replace my 1700 at 266mhz fsb, but I discovered they are going for $100 on eBay. This seems preposterous.

Are they really as fast as a new $100 processor, or does anyone know why they are so expensive? I don't think I have any other good options for upgrading this abit va-20 motherboard.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a processor/MB combo I could get new, or lightly used on eBay, that would be as close to $100 as possible, and about as fast (or faster of course) as the XP 3200?

They are much slower than new $100 processors, but don't forget that for new $100 CPU you will need to buy new motherboard and memory. So, the Athlon XP 3200+ CPUs are priced such that buying just the Athlon XP CPU is cheaper than buying Athlon 64 3200+ (about $25 - $35) + motherboard ($40 - $50) + memory.

For $50 you can get an ECS/Foxconn LGA775 motherboard, with C2D support, and then for the other $50 you can get a Conroe-L Celeron at 1.6GHz Very Happy There's your $100 kit, with HUGE expandability.

The 64 pricing seems pretty similar to me for new CPU, MB, and memory as for just an used XP CPU. There are a couple 64 MB out there that use the old DDR memory too. I don't know why one would chose an used XP at that price. There are so many more options the newer your hardware is.

I would expect to see what you said if the market was a monopoly or oligopoly. But since there are still a substantial number of sellers, it sure seems like something else is going on.

I think I am going to take Wizzard1's advice though, thanks! I'd like to support AMD, but they seem to not have the price to performance advantage right now, and they are being schizophrenic with their socket choices.

One more thing I forgot to mention - simplicity of upgrading of just a CPU: you pull the old one and drop a new one. Even people who doesn't know much about computers can do it.
