Hi
Am trying to upgrade an ASUS A7N8X-E deluxe from a Sempron to the Athlon 3200+. The PSU is rated at 400W. Fitted everything - the PC starts up for less than a second and dies. Only unplugging the PSU completely allows for a repeat of the short start-up and it dies again. Reinstalling the Sempron - the PC works fine. Any idea what the problem is? Do I need more than 400W? Thanks. |

Are you using the same heatsink?
Temp issues are common with reused heatsinks... a tto high temp detected will auto shut down the pc to prevent damage to the cpu. To my knowledge it should happen a few swcpnds after at least, because in the first minute the cpu usually doesn't get hot enough. |

Hi
Yes I am using the same heatsink but the sutdown occurs within a second so I don't thinkl it's a temperature initiated shutdown. I also defaulted to the original BIOS (latest version) and changed only to SATA sensing so that I will see the HDD. Still - doesn't work.
Thanks

I'll do some further cheking...
Power supply wattage? Other components in the case? Hope you don't have a 9800 XT sucking all the power |

HI
I have a measly FX5500 as a graphics card, one HDD and that's about it.
The chip was tested before I tried this - could I have fried it? If a CPU is dead doesn't the board come alive at all? This Mobo has a vocal POST but it doesn't get as far s that - dies in less than a second.
Thanks for your time and help so far, guys. |

Hi
Changed the PSU and am getting a power and fans but not more than that. POST does not occur, system does not initialize or start-up. Am not even getting the BIOS start. BUT - CPU heatsink is cerainly heating up, reasonably, so the 3200+ is not dead.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

A dead cpu makes the system not to start or have black screen with nothing happening.
Can you test the cpu in another mobo of a friend or other person?
What's your motherboard revision? Usually its pcb rev xx or ver. xx or similar stamped on the mobo.
Your bios revision? --- Supports sempron, should be 1012, xp 3200+ is from 1001...
Would you check the Cpu_Fsb jumper to be correctly set on 400/333/266?
http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/nforce2/a7n8x-e/u1322_a7n8x-e_qsg.pdf
download that to see where to look.
If the jumper i sincorrectly set to 200 move it.
Normally the cpu should start anyway but at a lower frequency, this is a last shot.
If it doesn't work I give up. |

Hi Dume and all
Thanks for your help and ideas.
I have a rev. 1.1 PCB, and I have BIOS version 1012 which is the latest I could find on the Asus website.
I tried starting up in both 200MHz and 400MHz settings for the FSB and neither worked. Fans and HDDs power up, CPU heatsink warms up but even the graphics card doesn't start. So I am at a real loss.
Unfortunately I done have any other available setup in order to check the CPU itself, but I presume the startup and the heatsink heating signify that it is working.
I'd really appreciate any more ideas you may have.
Many Thanks
