Just got a HP Laaserjet 4L for cheap ($2) at a thrift store.

Took it apart to get the CPU lol

its a custom marked HP chip, but the web says the printer has a 18.5MHz i960

Date codes are all early 1993

This isnt a normal speed at all.

a 31.3MHz Crystal is connected to the CPU
its a 160 pin QFP

the CA, CF, HA, HD, and HT i960's all came in a 168 pin package, so I would guess its one of them.

Any other clues?

Here is what the board looks like:

Here is the board from a 4ML (which has postscript)
it actually has a chip labeled as i960

ah ha
this bit:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/comp.periphs.printers/msg/153681a70525417f?dmode=source&hl=en

Doesnt list the 4L specifically, but the 4ML is close enough, so its a 18.5MHz i960KA, integrated into the HP chip.

You can see in the 4ML board they are 2 chips, but I bet in the 'L' they are one

From HP service manual:

Code:
CPU
The Formatter PCA incorporates the following microprocessors:
 LaserJet 4L - Motorola 68000, 16 MHz.
 LaserJet 4ML - Intel 80960KA, 18.5 MHz.
 LaserJet 4P - Intel 80960SA, 16 MHz.
 LaserJet 4MP - Intel 80960KA, 18.5 MHz, 32K instruction cache.

My presumption is that the original processor-card
in your LaserJet 4L was exchanged by another card.
Looks like a newer and faster board and
HP-ASIC with integreated 68k or i960-core (likely) or
even a HP-brewed core.... P/N of that board?
