Poor Celeron D Overclocking

I have a Celeron D 336 on a Gigabyte 945P-S3 rev. 3.3, but I' dont know why I can't get past 3.8GHz with it even @ 1.8V, without increasing the voltage I can't gat past 3.1GHz, so what could be the problem, its the CPU a zero overclocking potenial one or its my motherboard the culprit?

What kind of speed are you looking for?? Isn't the stock clock speed for your CPU 2.8GHz?? If so, 3.1GHz is an 11% increase, and 3.8GHz is 36% increase. Sounds good to me.............

Whell I'm looking for 4GHz, but If I overclock it even 300MHz thus giving 3.1GHz it loses its stability @ stock voltage and Prime 95 would fail after 45minutes, and I don't know what to blame because I have a Celeron D 315 on socket 478 that could hit 3.4GHz on stock voltage and the 315 stock frequency is 2.26GHz so thats a 1140MHz OC @ stock voltage and BOX cooler, but my new 336 can't even break 300MHz OC @ stock voltage without loosing its stablilty, now I'm runing it @ 3780MHz but @ 1.6V, and it runed prime 95 for 2 hours before closing it. But the odd thing is that rising the vcore to 1.8V would make the PC post @ 4GHz but its stability is close to none. Could it be the temerature? @ 1.8V in BIOS is @ 70C with a Akasa AK-965 heatpipe cooler.
Now @ 3.78GHz in idle its runing @ 55C.

So my final question is:

1. Would chaning the cooler improve its stability? If yes could the temperature hold my OC back or this particular CPU that I have can't get past 4GHz and be stable.

Its probly got somthing to do with heat, are you monitoring it while under stress? I would geuss you could Lap the heatsink and the Cpu heatspreader to get a better contact point between the two , but you should seriously get better cooling especially with the high volts youre throwing thu it.

I lapped the IHS and removed the old thermal paste and added AS5, before doing these things it booted @ 1.8V but right after the post screen it just shut down, now it will load windows but after about 20minutes @ 4GHz it will BSOD with a Machine Check Exception error, I'm starting to think that the cooling could be the problem, but.... I need to be shure.
I readed on some forums that I shouldn't rise the voltage on the Prescott core higher than 1.6V, because the CPU could be damaged. its not a problem if the CPU will be damaged in time because I will change it next year with a Core 2 but could the CPU die suddenly? You know like the old Northwood's did, after rising the Vcore past 1.65V.

There are MANY forums, threads and articles that discuss OCing the Celeron D. I would suggest referring to them. But after a quick look at these sources it looks like most people cannot get to 4Ghz with the stock heatsink so cooling is probably your obstacle.

Not all processors can overclock- Thats why some are rated at 2Ghz and some 3GHz Very Happy

After I tested the CPU all night I just found a "awsome" thing, the CPU isn't stable while overcloked regardless of Vcore, the only stable cock is the default 2800MHz, I think I realy "killed" the chip's overcloking potential, by rising the Vcore to 1.8V, (whell I tought the Prescott could handell that voltage, but what do you know, It couldn't...)

I was under the impression that there were various revisions of this chip and some overclock better than others. I doubt you "killed" the ability to OC a chip. Never heard of doing that before.

Whell my CPU has got the G1 revision, whell if you rise the vcore to much you could stress the tranzistors wich could damage them so you could "kill" your Chip's overclocking potential, over a period if time.
