This can be extrememly difficult but I have found a simple solution.


I use a black dry erase marker to cover the top, then with my dry finger wipe off the excess. It makes a nice contrast that scans or takes to photography easily.

The same process can also be used for Intel P4 type CPUs with the micro-engraving. The engravings on these chips are much lighter so you may have to work at it a bit (I ended up useing graphite and the dry erase marker)

what kind of scanner do you have?

i havent had any problems with these:



ive got a canon 3000f .. im really happy with it.

its durable too. my cat has knocked it onto the floor (4 foot drop) about 5 times now. just did it last night, too. broke a huge chip out of my only intel dx4 >Sad

also i need to get a k6 with no black markings Wink

your ascanner is doing great I have a Visioneer 5300USB.

Its a cheapy but has lasted for over 5000 scans and tons of drops, kicks and other abuses. Some times it will pick up the etchings but mostly they look crummy.

heh

my only complaint about my scanner is that it scans all the cores as black.. it doesnt pick up the blue or greenish color they have if you look at them.. but i doubt thats just my scanner
